Ortho-K (short for Orthokeratology) is a non-surgical treatment that involves wearing specially designed contact lenses overnight to reshape the cornea or the front surface of the eye. The goal is to correct refractive errors, such as myopia (nearsightedness), so that the person can see clearly during the day without needing glasses or contact lenses.
As well as being a way of correcting refractive error, Ortho-K is also used to slow down the progression of myopia (or shortsightedness). By reshaping the cornea and reducing peripheral defocus, it can slow down the elongation of the eyeball, which is the primary cause of myopia progression. With the potential to reduce the risk of high myopia and related complications later in life, Ortho-K is a terrific option for myopia management. There is also no age limitation for Ortho-K with children as young as 6 years old
Whilst LASIK and other forms of refractive surgery involve permanently changing the shape of the cornea through surgical intervention, Ortho-K provides a less invasive and reversible treatment. The non-permanent nature of the correction is an advantage for those who may wish to discontinue for any reason.
